Wow! I was just looking him up last week and saw recent photos. Amazing how well he aged and how long he lived considering the life long bb lifestyle. Rip! He was one of the best!

Finally a dude that actually used low doses instead of just lying doing so. PIP

Insulin in the 80s? Seems a bit early
He did fight Joe Louis but Joe was 137 yrs old

It vwas lasix at the German Grand Prix, he borrowed what he thought werre 5mg tabs from another competitor and they turned out to be 20mgs
He said anywhere other than Germany where the medical treatment is top notch he would likley have died.
-
Absolute legend. Most likely competed longer span of time than any other. His list of competitions is amazing. Built one of the easiest recognizable physiques of his time. He made short biceps arms look good. A feat not many are able to do.

Insulin in the 80s? Seems a bit early

1. M&F ran a story on this episode. One year he overdid it with diuretics in 88 or 89 and fortunately a doctor or nurse was around to help him out and revive him. Wasn't insulin. M&F ran it as a cautionary story, like they always did with stay-roids in the 80's.
2. His age was oft debated, some citing 1930 other citing 1938 iirc. Either way, I think he was still the oldest pro to win a pro show, he was either 53 or 61when he won the Niagara Falls Pro Show in 91, depending on the whichever dob you believe.
He gets accused of lying about his age but it may not be that simple. I doubt record keeping was that accurate in 1930's Barbados. If a midwife delivered him at birth, probably even less so. I doubt Albert even knew his actual date of birth. Archie Moore, who held the record for the oldest boxing champ for decades, also was frequently accused of lying about his birthday.

Lasix is strange. One friend took a Lasix and lost 18lbs overnight. My little brother when he was a little kid swallowed a 20mg Lasix and nothing happened. I don't remember what the circumstances were, why he took it, but I was angry LOL. Now at the hospital I was given several IV shots of Lasix, one was 80mg and nothing happened as far as weight though my potassium went low and I had to drink this disgusting potassium solution that burned my mouth.
A few pros did experiment with insulin in the 80s, I think Mike Christian mentioned ODing once because didn't know how much to take, would take a mL or whatever.
I don't remember the stats for sure, but I think suicide attempts involving insulin are only successful once in several hundred and usually thee people have taken whole vials. A friend took a whole vial and survived without any medical intervention. So the death risk is extremely exaggerated, especially when involving bb dosages such as 10-20iu. Basically won't happen.

Diuretics indeed are more likely.
Here they state he was 89, but still a very respectful age considering his lifestyle

He had quite the resume of professional competition. Truly amazing! Bay approved!
Over the years I have heard of him fudging about his age… any thoughts on why he might do it if it’s true? I never thought of BB as a venue where competitors suffered age discrimination—especially now. Older physiques are celebrated even if it’s with a word of caution. Perhaps that wasn’t true in earlier years.
May he rest in peace.

Id guess, his face 'type' and premature balding gave him an older look than he really was and - if he was lying about it- it probably evolved as a joke. Just a guess but He was probably asked about his age because of his looks and he just started playing into it. After awhile it became the thing he was known for.
-
Beckles age is a weird one. For years, he claimed 1930. Joe Roark, the IFBB historian for a lot of years, claims Beckles told John Hansen he was born in 1936, and Roark believes 1938 more likely.
Roark on tracking down Beckles age in various threads -
https://www.getbig.com/boards/index.php?topic=101196.msg1461551#msg1461551 .
https://www.getbig.com/boards/index.php?topic=68895.msg1023096#msg1023096 .
The Hansen claim in this thread -https://www.facebook.com/100044496156930/posts/albert-beckles-the-british-gentleman-albert-al-beckles-born-in-1930-is-a-former-/329429291883607/ .
-
Roark believes 1938 more likely.
This is based on really flimsy evidence, though, like:
"he didn't compete in Master's shows when he was eligible!"
"The magazines didn't say that he was especially old!"
"his passport said DoB 1930, but it looked more like 193o, so I think he tampered with it!"
There's really no solid proof for a 1938 DoB, and we should probably just take Beckles at his word, especially as he did produce a passport that documented a 1930 DoB.

So true.
He was really well proportioned. Had the freakiest biceps, was always in condition, always looked like he was chiseled out of stone and extremely dense with a great back.
Even when his placings dropped off, it wasn't like he was out of shape, the younger pros were just getting bigger and bigger. He was one of the most consistent bodybuilders for 20 years. The only other bodybuilder who comes close is Dexter in terms of consistency and longevity.

I concur, and I also believe that his birth certificate was probably wrong to begin with..........he may not have known his actual birthdate......but who knows or really cares......the guy was awesome!!

Well, Robbie claims he wasn't paid for Pumping Iron! He said Pumping Iron was a fraud! He said that all the bodybuilders THOUGHT they were going to be paid $50,000.00 for Pumping Iron. And the contracts they all signed denied them the money. Seems like they all trusted Arnold and it wasn't hard for him to give them the "wrong advices"!

Could possibly be twice that. Hell I'm 49 and have used for 30+. Many old timers don't get off totally, why would they if it's working. Like Milos is 62 and on 250 test and 50 Deca week. That kind of thing. "Steroids are constructive by definition, not destructive." Milos started as a teen I think, so maybe 40+ years possibly. That's not to say they are totally innocuous. How long were Hulk Hogan and Stallone on for? 50+ at least?
He wasn't extremely aesthetic but these pics are insane, especially in context, when they were taken and so on (state of PED protocols).

$50k for a documentary in 1974? That’s the equivalent of $330k today. There’s no way they all thought they were being paid that kind of money in the 70s. Especially for a documentary.
Who gets paid for a documentary? That might the dumbest thing I’ve heard.

$50k for a documentary in 1974? That’s the equivalent of $330k today. There’s no way they all thought they were being paid that kind of money in the 70s. Especially for a documentary.
Who gets paid for a documentary? That might the dumbest thing I’ve heard.
LOL exactly. One of the dumbest bodybuilder comments I've heard. Most would probably have paid to be in it if they had the money.
Am I misremembering but did Robby want pics of him taken down here or was it some other places. Another completely retarded idea. A smart bb would pay for his pics to be circulated as wide a possible.
I remember when Robby claimed Trevor Smith wanted him to take like 100 Dianabol tabs a day. I don't think so.
-
:'(
-
Robby`s full of shit !! ;D
Robbie also talks about "Robbie's Timeless Training Masterclass". Where you can get elite level coaching and access to an exclusive Facebook group with Robbie; and the chance to win the first ever Robbie Robinson trophy.

Robby bitched to Shawn Perine on Ironage and told him he didn't want any of us posting his pictures

This was posted on here back in 2024 but I had never seen it. Why did Robbie need to spit so much in the toilets?

It's not logical at all. What bodybuilder doesn't want exposure and fans posting their pics and admiring them? WTF! If there was a boycott and no one ever posted his pics or even talked about him, how'd he like that? LOL :D
I admire how ripped these bitch tits are! Never seen anything like it. He looks really on point there and very dehydrated. One top bb coach says never, ever take Lasix as a bodybuilder, you will probably look like you never trained a day in your life. Muscle is water and dehydrating also makes the veins disappear (a way to see if someone is really dehydrated). But some make it work.

He never got that big. Listed contest weight was, what, 200 pounds? Maybe 220 or 230 pounds in the off season?
The guys who have been dropping dead spend most of the year walking around at 280-300+. Look at the picture of Dauda in the other thread -- he's 300 pounds ez, and maybe much heavier.
I think it goes to show that carrying around 300 pounds of muscle is just as bad for your body as carrying around 300 pounds of fat, but that staying around 220-230 pounds can be okay even in the very long term.
A lot of guys who used to get huge in the off-season, like Gunter Schlierkamp and Mustafa Mohammad, had health scares and had to drop all of the weight fast, and now they look like they never trained. This is analogous to obese people who have health issues and are forced to drop a lot of weight.

I suspect it's not so much that lots of muscle is bad but those trying to max out carry around a lot of drug induced water for long periods. The extra drugs and the water is bad. Now guys taking lots of GH due to the cheap price really risk CHF as the GH potentiates cardiomegaly I think. If doing lots of drugs, watch your ankles closely and if you start getting a persistent cough immediately get checked out.

Yeah but to live to be to 95 years of age, and most of those years he was abusing steroids, that's amazing, if he was natty maybe he could've lived to be 105

Well said Pamith.

I wonder how nervous Arnold is getting?

If you saw him in contest condition in person, trust me,you`d say he looked huge.

I assumed they had thrown him out because of stealing. But spitting? Very strange story. Robbie = trouble, too many weird stories about him going round.

Look how healthy and in-shape they all look. You would want to look like them. No guts, no collapsing veins. They're even dressed normally.
-
This guy won just about everything but the Olympia (even there he placed 2nd to Haney). And from some of his training video, he appears a lot stronger than he looks.
He would have looked a lot younger in his heyday, if he had just shaved his head completely bald. Nonetheless, a Hall of Fame bodybuilder is gone.

Yeah, that's what gets me about this guy. Beckles was incredibly muscular -- and he also looked athletic. Like he could run for a mile or two without dropping dead. (Lunsford and Dauda would definitely drop dead.)
Pretty close to the ideal male physique, IMO.
The older I get, the more I realize that there's nothing desirable about monstrous bulbous lats or giant turnip-shaped quads.

Vince Gironda thought that the thigh should be as thick up top as middle and lower part. He thought regular squats caused the turnip shape. Complete baloney I say, it's all genetic. Of course he thought his own quad shape was ideal and that he consciously caused that shape :D

Beckles, Labrada, Paris, Oliva, Padilla, Benfatto, Jeffers. I don’t think any of the current pros are able to run.

However, I'm one of the very few who think he was born in 1938' though
No way he was 61 when he won Niagara Falls Pro Invitational IFBB in 91'

Yeah that seems near impossible. I think people like Joe Weider had an interest in making him older than his true age. I actually remember when he won that show, it was awe inspiring if you believed the age claim. Levrone lying about his age however should have been embarrassing for him. He was also born in Rome, Italy according to IMDB :D

You don’t think a prestigious magazine such as this would have vetted their information?

Classic Waller move here. I’m grateful he switched to shirts, can you imagine if he was still pulling this posing trunks prank in the early 2000’s on Dugdale? We would have some stories!

For Joe Weider it sells more fart powders making people believe you can look like Albert at 60
And you can win the Arnold Classic NATURAL just using the Weider Principles Like Mike Aslhey did.
For both Albert and Mike Ashley, it helped them make them an icon out of a lie in a "sport" so difficult to gain popularity or even a decent income
