And didn't they find millions in cash stuffed in suitcases and safes and cabinets?  I think I recall seeing that related to this case.

He was asking for gold bars for work related expenses.  I can just imagine how that went.  "Uhhh... yeah, so I had to put gas in my vehicle to get to this meeting, how about just throwing a gold bar my way for that?   You know... gas prices bad out there."

**edit**

"FBI agents also seized approximately $2 million in United States currency," the document states. "Finally, FBI agents seized approximately 35 luxury watches, many of which were Rolex brand."

The CIA says it informed the FBI of its suspicions about Rush, who apparently fell under scrutiny after he began asking for gold bars last November. That's when he began making "several requests … to obtain a significant quantity of foreign currency and tens of millions of dollars in gold bars for work-related expenses," according to the affidavit.

I always wondered why people thought they could use gold during an apocalyptic scenario. What value would it have to trade for?

The first rule about having gold is not to tell anyone you have it.

It's good to have in a financial apocalypse.

I don't own any gold bars. But it has a historical track record for total government collapse back to the Roman empire. AI tells me it was used during Weimar Germany in the 1920s, Venezuela in the 2010s, and Zimbabwe in 2008.

Gold is a hedge against runaway currency devaluation such as experienced in pre-WW2 Germany.

As an investment it is poor since it produces no income and historically has only, at best, matched inflation.

It also is costly to store and protect.

Those in Weimar Germany would have been better off taking their gold to another country until hyperinflation blew over.
