Different sports, different skill sets. I used to watch local rugby matches while I lived in Phoenix. Impressive abilities and a fast paced game. I also went to the ASU college football games. Completely different styles of play. Both have their exceptional athletes.

There's no way a football team would destroy rugby teams in a game of rugby. Football stops a lot, and they play with pads. Rugby constantly moves, and most players don't wear shoulder pads. There's some big Rugby players as well. Look at this Springbok player. He's 6'-8" and fairly muscular.

The sports culture for schools have changed a lot in South Africa.
The top Rugby schools now have full weightlifting gyms like those in the US.
Even 20 years ago the weightlifting aspect was not really looked at.
Now the rugby players look considerably more muscular, before it was mostly stringy looking guys in the backline and heavy, obese players in the frontline/scrum.
