In the Western Roman Empire, Britain was the first province to be abandoned, they were told to 'look to their own defences' against the Barbarians due to the rest of mainland Europe already dealing with wandering Barbarian groups settling within the territory.
There are some similarities here, in that the loss of territory was in large part due to unchecked mass migration.
