Mariah assumed that Virgin would promote her albums in the same way Sony did prior to her divorce from Tommy. In fact the reason she left Sony was because they didn't promote the Rainbow album enough. She personally met with the CEO of Sony in Japan to negotiate what she would need to do to get out of her contract.
The whole incident where she went on MTV TRL and took off her shirt was because she thought they weren't promoting the Glitter album enough and she decided to take matters into her own hands.
She was actually with Island Def Jams from 2002 to 2014. She has said in interviews that Island Def Jams was not ready for her on the Charbraclet album. The only album that was a commercial success at Island Def Jams was the Emancipation of Mimi. My belief is she would not have stayed if Emancipation of Mimi was not the huge success it was.
